How Chiropractors Can Help With Constipation in Kids & Adults | Brown Family Chiropractic

Hi everyone, my name is Dr. Tera Pfarr and
I am a chiropractor here at Brown Family Chiropractic located in Racine, Wisconsin.
Today I’d like to talk to you about kids in chiropractic and specifically kids
and constipation with chiropractic. And how that can really help them heal and
facilitate healing with the issue of constipation. I see it a lot. Kids three,
four days, even up to a week between bowel movements. That is not a healthy
thing. So we need to really work on digestion and work on promoting
elimination in the body to get all that toxic load out of the body. Because you
all know how it feels when your gut is not feeling great. You’re bloated. You’re
uncomfortable. Kids or infants even have the same symptoms. So how can we make
them feel better with some relief and get things moving a little bit faster? So
in infants we really work the sacrum or the lower back right at the base of your
spine. That helps facilitate, but it feeds the digestive system or the colon. So
getting some movement, if there’s some restriction in the joint, or where that
nerve leaves, we open up that communication that can promote digestion.
We do a little thing called spondylitic therapy where there’s your sympathetic
nervous system in your parasympathetic nervous system. And if you don’t remember
those terms from school, it’s your fight-or-flight or your rest and digest.
So a lot of times when kids or infants have digestion issues where they’re not
going very frequently, they’re in sympathetic overdrive. So they’re saying
I need to survive today, fight or flight. I’m not gonna put
digestion upfront right now because that’s on the back burner. So we need to
balance out those symptoms and I can do that by doing some tapping
intermittently on the sacrum and that can help activate that parasympathetic
nervous system or that rest and digest and help get that bowel movement
frequency up and running again and more consistent. So that’s a great adjunct
with chiropractic adjustments to help open up that communication again between
the brain and that digestive system. We also throw maybe some
probiotics at the child or the infant. Probiotics live in our digestive system
and the the good bacteria that live in our gut outnumber human cells four to
one. So their health is very important and with the “Standard American Diet” or
the “SAD” Diet that I call it, that diet generally feeds bad bacteria in yeast
and we have this imbalance of the bad stuff in our digestive system versus the
good stuff. So we need to kind of switch that around and put more good bacteria
in our digestive system so it can break down that food, we can absorb it, and we
can eliminate properly. So probiotics are a great adjunct to throw at constipation
issues. As well as hydration I feel kids, you know, they don’t drink
enough water, they drink a lot of sugary juices, or maybe some sodas. Getting those
out of the diet, really focusing on hydration, can really help push things
through and detoxify the body. The colon, or the lower end of your digestive
system, is where you absorb enough water. So if there is a lack of water in your
body, everything is going to be kind of dried out. I’d like to say at the end so
we really need to hydrate and nourish our body so it can pull all that new
absorption of water back into the body and it will be a nice smooth release on
the way out. So hydration, probiotics, chiropractic adjustments, spondylitic
therapy are great ways to get that digestive system up and running again
and get our kids healthy. Hope you learned some stuff and if you have a
child or an infant with these issues feel free to give our office a call.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
