Emergency Surgery – Lincoln Surgical Associates – Shiloh, IL

Emergency Surgical Team Dr. D. Scott Crouch, emergency and general
surgeon, discusses Lincoln Surgical’s emergency surgical team. As the hospital system has expanded here in
the Metro East, it’s made for more locations for us to cover as a practice. So in order
to do that more effectively and offer the best in patient care and follow the reputation
we’ve earned, we divided the practice into acute care surgical practice. We call those
doctors surgicalists and we have more electivist team. We are on standby at the hospitals available,
at least one of us, 24/7 at every hospital for the various surgical emergencies that
may come to the hospital usually through the emergency room but not always. What do you most often see as an emergency
surgeon? The most common acute surgical needs that
are what we would call unplanned would be bowel obstructions, perforated colons so diverticulitis,
a lot of abdominal pain that we’re called for initially maybe not even diagnosed early
on, but we’re there to help sort that out. It could range from gallbladder problem to
appendicitis, as I said bowel obstructions, diverticulitis, sometimes hernias that may
have been long-standing and present for quite some time but become emergencies because they
become stuck or incarcerated. Those are things that can’t really be seen in the office and
managed electively. They need to be dealt with immediately so that’s when we’re called.
